First Monday Message of 2014-2015

Hi! I’m VERY excited to write the first post of the 2014-2015 school year.  This blog will be the place you find important information, what we are learning in each subject, and the Reader’s Choice question! Please let me know if you have any questions regarding how to navigate the blog.

In reading this week, we will be focusing on the Common Core State Standard (CCSS) 3.1.  In “kid-friendly” terms, often called an “I Can” Statement, it says:

“I can ask and answer questions to demonstrate I understand what I read.”photo 1

Our reading instruction during workshop time this week will be focusing on understanding how to ask quality questions and how to answer questions using evidence from the text.

We will be creating our very first entry in our Reader’s Notebook regarding this standard. It will look just like the example below! This will become a reference that each child will be able to use during reading.

We will read a variety of texts and practice this skill/strategy during workshop time.

In writing this week, we are focusing on using complete sentences vs. fragments.  Today we learned that a sentence has TWO basic parts: the who or the what, and what they are doing.  Throughout the week, we will be practicing this skill.  There will be a small, interactive in-class quiz on Friday.  Next Monday, we will be adding this to our class editing chart.

We will also be reviewing how to write friendly letters and working with launching strategies in our Writer’s Notebook.  It is my goal to show each student that writing doesn’t have to be boring and/or scary! 🙂

We have started a new curriculum in our district this year.  It is called My Math.  Today we started Chapter 1, which deals with place value.  Here is an overview of what is to be discussed and learned in this chapter:
